Frequently Asked Questions
What size is an Indian passport photo?
Indian passport photos are 35×45 mm with a plain white background, per the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) specifications. This is the format used at every PSK across India and at Indian consulates abroad.
Are you an Indian applying for a Schengen, UK, US, or Canadian visa?
Foreign destination visas use different specs from Indian passport: Schengen 35×45 mm light grey (see our dedicated page Schengen visa photo from India), UK 35×45 mm cream or white, US 51×51 mm white (DS-160 240 KB cap), Canada 50×70 mm white. Do NOT bring an Indian passport photo to a foreign visa appointment — the size or background may not match and the photo will be rejected.
Can I wear glasses in my Indian passport photo?
No. The Ministry of External Affairs does not accept passport photos with glasses since 2018.
Can I wear a head covering?
Head coverings are only permitted for religious reasons. The face must be fully visible — both eyes, full chin, and both sides of the face.
Is the same photo accepted at Indian consulates abroad?
Yes. The 35×45 mm PSK specification is identical at every Indian consulate worldwide (Indian Embassy London, San Francisco, Toronto, Sydney, Singapore, Dubai, etc). The same photo works for passport renewal whether you submit in India or abroad.
How recent must the photo be?
The photo must be taken within the last 6 months and reflect your current appearance.
Can I use this photo for an Indian e-Visa application?
No. Indian e-Visa applications (for foreigners visiting India) use a different specification — see our Indian Visa Photo page for the e-Visa portal spec.
Is my photo uploaded to your servers?
No. All processing happens in your browser. Your photo never leaves your device.
