Applying through Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)

Indian passport applications go through the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) network, not a walk-in counter. You upload your photo when you book the appointment slot online, and it becomes part of your application record, but PSK staff also capture a live photo during your in-person appointment, which is what actually goes on the printed passport. The photo you upload beforehand mainly needs to clear the online form and match how you look at the appointment, a photo that looks noticeably different from your real appearance is the more common cause of a hold-up than a minor size mismatch.

Since September 1, 2025, Indian missions and PSK have enforced a tighter ICAO framing rule than most other countries: your face must occupy 80 to 85% of the photo, not the 70-80% used elsewhere. Older guides (including some still circulating from before the change) will tell you 70-80% for India, that is now out of date. IDPhotoSnap applies the correct 80-85% target automatically for Indian passport photos.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is an Indian passport photo?

Indian passport photos are 35×45 mm with a plain white background, per the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) specifications. This is the format used at every PSK across India and at Indian consulates abroad.

How much of the frame should my face take up?

Since September 1, 2025, Indian embassies and PSK enforce tighter ICAO framing: your face, chin to crown, must cover 80 to 85% of the photo height, up from the 70-80% used in most other countries. IDPhotoSnap applies this tighter India-specific ratio automatically, you do not need to adjust anything manually.

Are you an Indian applying for a Schengen, UK, US, or Canadian visa?

Foreign destination visas use different specs from Indian passport: Schengen 35×45 mm light grey (see our dedicated page Schengen visa photo from India), UK 35×45 mm cream or white, US 51×51 mm white (DS-160 240 KB cap), Canada 50×70 mm white. Do NOT bring an Indian passport photo to a foreign visa appointment — the size or background may not match and the photo will be rejected.

Can I wear glasses in my Indian passport photo?

No. The Ministry of External Affairs does not accept passport photos with glasses since 2018.

Can I wear a head covering?

Head coverings are only permitted for religious reasons. The face must be fully visible — both eyes, full chin, and both sides of the face.

Is the same photo accepted at Indian consulates abroad?

Yes. The 35×45 mm PSK specification is identical at every Indian consulate worldwide (Indian Embassy London, San Francisco, Toronto, Sydney, Singapore, Dubai, etc). The same photo works for passport renewal whether you submit in India or abroad.

How recent must the photo be?

The photo must be taken within the last 6 months and reflect your current appearance.

Can I use this photo for an Indian e-Visa application?

No. Indian e-Visa applications (for foreigners visiting India) use a different specification — see our Indian Visa Photo page for the e-Visa portal spec.

Is my photo uploaded to your servers?

No. All processing happens in your browser. Your photo never leaves your device.
