Frequently Asked Questions
What size is a Canadian passport photo?
Canadian passport photos are 50×70 mm (5×7 cm, 2×2¾ inches) with plain white background. The face must be 31-36 mm from chin to crown. Same spec applies to the Permanent Resident Card itself (PR Card). NOTE: this is different from Canada visa application photos which are 35×45 mm — see /canada-visa-photo for visa specs.
Is the Canadian passport photo the same as the Canada visa photo?
No. Canadian passport (for citizens) and PR Card (for permanent residents) require 50×70 mm. Canada visa applications (visitor visa / TRV, study permit, work permit, super visa, PR application via Express Entry) require 35×45 mm. Two different specs. Pick based on which document you are applying for.
Where do I apply for a Canadian passport?
Canadian citizens apply at Service Canada offices across Canada or at Canadian embassies abroad (for citizens living overseas). PR Card applications are processed by IRCC. Both require the same 50×70 mm photo format.
Can I wear glasses in a Canadian passport photo?
No. IRCC prohibited glasses in Canadian biometric photos since 2016 — no medical or religious exceptions for ordinary glasses. Religious head covering is permitted as long as facial features are clearly visible.
How recent must the photo be?
The photo must have been taken within the last 6 months and represent your current appearance.
Is my photo uploaded to your servers?
No. All processing happens in your browser. Your photo never leaves your device — this matters for biometric data like a passport photo.
