Applying through Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)
Indian passport applications go through the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) network, not a walk-in counter. You upload your photo when you book the appointment slot online, and it becomes part of your application record, but PSK staff also capture a live photo during your in-person appointment, which is what actually goes on the printed passport. The photo you upload beforehand mainly needs to clear the online form and match how you look at the appointment, a photo that looks noticeably different from your real appearance is the more common cause of a hold-up than a minor size mismatch.
Since September 1, 2025, Indian missions and PSK have enforced a tighter ICAO framing rule than most other countries: your face must occupy 80 to 85% of the photo, not the 70-80% used elsewhere. Older guides (including some still circulating from before the change) will tell you 70-80% for India, that is now out of date. What size is the India e-Visa photo?
India e-Visa photos are 2×2 inches (51×51 mm, also written as 5×5 cm) — square format, NOT rectangular. Plain white background. The Indian e-Visa portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in) requires pixel dimensions between 350×350 and 1000×1000, JPEG format only, file size between 10 KB and 1 MB. This is the same square format as US passport / US visa photos — but DIFFERENT from Indian passport (35×45 mm rectangular). Head height (chin to crown) should be 1 to 1-3/8 inches (25-35 mm).
Who needs an India e-Visa?
Foreign citizens from 165+ eligible countries can apply for India e-Visa online. Categories include e-Tourist visa (TVoA, 30 days / 1 year / 5 years), e-Business visa, e-Medical visa, e-Medical Attendant visa, and e-Conference visa. Citizens of the US, UK, Australia, Canada, most of Europe, Japan, Singapore, UAE, and many others are eligible.
Where do I submit the India e-Visa photo?
The India e-Visa is fully online at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Upload your photo as part of the online application. No biometric appointment unless converting to a regular visa. After approval (typically 24-72 hours), the e-Visa is sent by email and shown to immigration at the Indian airport on arrival.
What is the difference between India e-Visa and regular India visa?
e-Visa is online-only (no embassy visit) for tourism, business, medical, conference. Photo: 50×50 mm square uploaded online. Regular India visa (long-stay employment, student, journalist, research) requires submission at Indian consulate / VFS Global with physical photos — typically 50×50 mm prints. Why is my photo rejected at indianvisaonline.gov.in?
Top rejection reasons: wrong size (must be 50×50 mm square, not 35×45 mm rectangular like Indian passport), wrong file format (must be JPEG, not PNG or HEIC), file size out of range (must be 10 KB - 1 MB), background not pure white (off-white, grey, or cream tints rejected), face not fully visible, glasses worn, or photo over 6 months old.
